Dance Shelter 2009
The Chicago Moving Company presents Dance Shelter a 2-week concert of modern dance works by veteran dancemaker (CMC Artistic Director) Nana Shineflug and rising stars (CMC Artists in Residence): Cindy Brandle Dance Company; Breakbone DanceCo.; and The Humans (Rachel Bunting). See all this at the beautiful, intimate Hamlin Park Fieldhouse Theater.
The Chicago Moving Company performs the celebrated duet "Hati-Hati"-- "danced exquisitely . . . filled with lifts and acrobatic feats" (Chicago Reader), set to Dan Schmidt's jazz score for Gamelan orchestra, with costumes by Collin Bunting. The Humans break their brilliant "who I am, who I am not" into shards--and add some curious embellishments: a human terrarium, mirrored cubes/heads, and shadow puppets. When colors separate through a prism, what happens to the rainbow? Hot off the heels of their successful Ruth Page Theater engagement, CBDC (Cindy Brandle Dance Company) proffers a structured improvisation/collaboration with Barry Bennett and the Impending Behavior Orchestra. Breakbone brings two works to the stage: the "ingenious" solo-performance "Fix Your Teeth B*tch"--a multi-media work that takes place in the mind and body of a dental patient and "makes contemporary theater feel alive" (TimeOut Chicago) and a work-in-progress/preview of "Excavation of Remains". Colored with irony and humour, the work is set in a morgue and uses stories (real and imagined) from the perspective of the decedent--with video, live musical accompaniment, text, and seven stellar performers.
