Ray Obiedo's Urban Latin Jazz Project - Red-Hot Latin Jazz
Latin guitar legend Ray Obiedo emerged during the 1980s as one of Northern California's most admired and prolific jazz, pop and fusion musicians. He toured with artists as diverse as organist Johnny "Hammond" Smith and avant trombonist Julian Priester and formed the popular fusion band Kick, with Sheila E. on drums.
Obiedo invades Pearl's for three exciting nights with his explosive Urban Latin Jazz Project. Don't miss this great event, as Ray Obiedo and band light up the night!
A wide-ranging musical sensibility came naturally to guitarist Ray Obiedo as he grew up in the vibrant cultural melting pot of the San Francisco Bay Area. Miles Davis, Antonio Carlos Jobim and the stars of Motown were just a few of his early influences. Obiedo came of age playing funky, James Brown-style rhythm guitar. He soon stretched out into the jazz world, but always retained the influends of his r&b roots.
In addition to leading his own bands and performing with San Francisco's many Latin jazz giants, Obiedo has toured and recorded with masters like Herbie Hancock, George Duke and Lou Rawls.
The Urban Latin Jazz Project features an excellent cast, including saxophonist Alex Myrzun, pianist Rose Ann Dimalanta, bassist David Belove, drummer Paul Van Wageningen, and percussionist Derek Rolando.
As Obiedo told writer Chuy Verela in an interview for Latin Beat Magazine last year, "My music has always been about the inclusion of styles. It's my interpretation of what I hear. With this group, we focus more on the Caribbean and Brazilian forms. The 'urban' part is the funk and those Oakland syncopated grooves."
