The War to End All Wars--How Did it Happen? - John Colangelo
This year is the centennial of the beginning of the First World War. Most people remember from high school history class that it began with the assassination of the Austrian archduke. But the causes of the war were of course much deeper and were based on antagonisms that began many years earlier. John Colangelo will lead three discussions about the causes and consequences of the First World War. In the first two classes of this course, we will discuss the major trends among the great powers that led to the outbreak of hostilities. At the last class we will discuss the long term consequences of World War I that continue to exist in our world today. The First World War changed the world's political map and resulted in more fundamental social and cultural changes than any other event in history. It resulted in a loss of military and civilian lives, produced massive societal changes, and introduced political upheaval that set the stage for global history ever since. We still live with the consequences of World War I - many of today's most troubled world areas are the direct result of the war. John Colangelo worked in the field of labor relations for corporations in New York and Los Angeles for 25 years . Since moving to the central coast in 2001, John has worked as a high school counselor and has taught a number of continuing education courses in history.
