Beyond the Threshold Seattle International Dance Festival
From Helsinki to Mumbai, Beyond the Threshold's 9-day gobal feast of dance features contemporary artists from India to Finland.
Purchase tickets at this site for performances at Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center June 19 and 21 with a split-bill evening including 4 different dance groups and projects and one dance film: 1) See Mirva Brigitta Makinen (Finland), Trinidad Martinez (Spain)and Cyrus Khambatta (Seattle) as the three create a work together from different countries then assemble it in Seattle. Entitled "Party of One," the piece explores our internal social environment contrasted to the external one. Who are the guests we invite to the party inside our own mind? And how does that affect how we "party" with those outside our own mind? What happens when the party-goers speak different languages? Come see the show and find out.
2) Astad Deboo (India), a Mumbai-based artist sets work on a local company of Indian/Contemporary dancers presenting a collaboration with Cyrus Khambatta and his Phffft! Dance Theater Company. Both artists are of Parsi origin (an ancient Persian race), Mr. Khambatta, second-generation American born and Mr. Deboo having never left his homeland. The piece, entitled, pratyaavartana or, the way homeintegrates the movement styles of each of the companies in a fusional contemporary-traditional hybrid, think Slumdog Millionaire meets Forrest Gump.
3) Claire Filmon and Stephane Els (France) are Company Asphodeles Danses Envol. "Asphodele" is a small blue or white flower, the subject of a Matisse painting, that grows only on mountain tops. The Greek origins of the word mean "the flower of the forgotten." And like this flower, Claire and Stephane's work presents a performance style both delicate and nuanced. eN cOUrs, the piece the two will perform, is a sensitive and precious little piece art you will want to take home in your pocket.
4) The Phffft! Dance Theater Company will present a world-premiere of its' latest work, Interview with The American Dream. Using interviews to create a sound track generated by randomly calling one person in each state in the U.S., the piece explores how American's notion of the "American dream" has/has not changed with recent events. With movement that requires precision, split-second timing and a powerful cast of some of the best dancers in the city, this company merges meaningful and emotional work with out-of-this world dancing ability.
5) Based on the Russian writer's novel Master and Margarita, the festival presents a dance film, a collaboration between former Phffft! Company dancer, Paige Phillips and Polish film Director, Przemek Pardyak. Entitled "As Was Said," the sensuous and mysterious film hosts a battery of quirky characters, intriguing plots and subplots with the feel of a secret society of misfits, akin to undergrund world of Alice in Wonderland. The film was shot entirely in Seattle and includes Phffft!'s dancer of three years running, Chris McCallister among its cast.
Don't miss this opportunity to visit the four courners of the world without even leaving Seattle. The festival only comes around once a year and this year seating is limited, so purchase your tickets early.
