Mathematics & Islam -- A Story of Cooperation and Peace
If you could go back in time to the city of Baghdad in the year 750, you would find a diverse population, living in relative harmony, collaborating on mathematical and scientific projects that have benefitted the rest of the world ever since. Mathematician Pat McKeague will trace the evolution of Islamic mathematics from Baghdad to Spain, and from there into Western Europe. We'll see a picture of an advanced, sophisticated Muslim world, far different from the one depicted in mainstream media today. We'll also find peoples and cultures more like us than we imagine, and see the significance of the contributions from the Middle East to the mathematics currently taught in our schools. Pat McKeague earned his BA in Mathematics from California State University, Northridge and his MS in Mathematics from Brigham Young University. He began his teaching career at Lompoc High School in Lompoc, California in 1970. In 1973 he became a full-time instructor at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, California. He has written 16 textbooks in mathematics. Pat is very active in the mathematics community giving presentations at mathematics conference around the country. He was on the writing team for the American Mathematics Association for Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) Beyond Crossroads project. He is the recipient of the AMATYC Presidential Award, for his service to the two-year college mathematics community. Four years ago he started his own publishing company, XYZ Textbooks, with the goal of lowering the cost of mathematics textbooks for community college students.
