reinvent verb (used with object) 1. to invent again or anew, especially without knowing that the invention already exists. 2. to remake or make over, as in a different form. 3. to bring back; revive.
How can we gain inspiration from the past to inform today's expression and tomorrow's new directions? Rick Rodrigues, Professor Emeritus at CCSF, will share his method of how learning from the "old masters" has inspired his own personal work as well as informs the work of contemporary artists. We'll get a chance to see this technique demonstrated live, by Cindy Shih.
Jessica Wan and Tim Eischens will perform songs by composers Gounod, Hahn, and Stravinsky, exploring how they reinvented and repurposed music from the 1700s. And we're excited to present two settings of "Widmung" (Dedication), a poem by Rückert: one by Schumann (1840), and one by pianist and composer Michael Anthony Schuler (2010), which was given its world premiere last fall with Jessica in a LIEDER ALIVE! recital. Michael will play both settings of "Widmung" and share his thoughts on setting the poem in today's world.
Doors open at 7:15pm, show starts at 7:45pm.
