Lelia and Sebastiao SALGADO in Conversation
The David Brower Center presents:
Lelia Wanick and Sebastiao Salgado: Their Story An intimate discussion moderated by Dr. Ken Wilson, Executive Director of The Christensen Fund
Thursday, May 14 Doors Open 4 p.m., Program 4:30 - 6 p.m.
Followed by an opening reception for the Inaugural Exhibition: "Then and Now: Photographs by Sebastiao Salgado," curated and designed by Lelia Wanick Salgado.
Tickets are $35, all proceeds support the Brower Center's "Art of Advocacy" program.
Lelia and Sebastiao met in high school and married in 1967. It was Lelia's camera that Sebastiao took along on trips to Africa for the World Bank in the early seventies, which sparked his interest in photography and led him to abandon his career as an economist. Lelia had trained as an architect and urban planner, and curated their numerous exhibitions and book projects, and she directs Amazonas Images, which the couple established in Paris in 1994.
Please join us for an intimate and wide-ranging conversation moderated by Dr. Ken Wilson, Executive Director of The Christensen Fund. Lelia and Sebastiao have raised two children, have done as much as anyone living to advance humanity and social justice, traveled together to all corners of the globe on photo documentary projects, and co-founded Instituto Terra in 1998. Instituto Terra, (www.institutoterra.us <http://www.institutoterra.us/> ), a nonprofit organization based in Brazil, seeks to restore a small part of the Atlantic Forest through reforestation, environmental education, and sustainable development.
This hour-long event will cover the Salgado's forty plus years of partnership. How have they influenced and supported each others work? Why did they start Instituto Terra? How did that in turn inspire the Genesis project, in which they celebrate the creation of landscapes, life in all its forms and dignity, and its cultural diversity? The Salgados will share stories of both the devastation humans have caused to our planet as well as seeds of hope and positive change that they have witnessed and seek to bring forth through their current work with Instituto Terra and Genesis.
