Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition Centennial Celebration
Born of the Gold Rush Boom, the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition was Seattles first world fair, drawing nearly 4 million visitors in five months. Held at what is now the University of Washington campus, the fair celebrated the culture, industry, and innovation of the Pacific Northwest, and launched Seattle into the 20th century as a leading city. One hundred years later, the yearlong A-Y-P Centennial Celebration includes contributions from across the region, celebrating anew our diverse range of people, groups, and institutions. Events include performances, demonstrations, exhibits, lectures, showcases, parades, and a Town Hall presentation by Michael Herschensohn, the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture's manager of the Centennial Celebration. Just as the A-Y-P served as a window for the future, exploring the industrialization of salmon canning, trade with Pacific nations, a womans right to vote, and the look of Seattle, the centennial offers a chance to identify modern issues, and to envision the city's future. Presented by the Town Hall Center for Civic Life.
