Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents the Shawn Maxwell Quartet

The Shawn Maxwell Quartet is not your average saxophone quartet. While the instrumentation, alto sax/piano/bass/drums, is fairly common, the writing, approach & style are anything but. The band focuses on all original material penned by Shawn, is his own unique voice. The results are a high energy mixture of bebop, rock, hip hop, classical and fusion. To a remarkable degree, Shawn Maxwell has the urgea quality fundamental to those who create improvised music on a nightly basis. In this way, it is not enough to simply create, but the need to innovate guides each note. His art lies in addressing the ordinary modalities of life in an extraordinary way, placing notes in their most complimentary places with precision and enthusiasm. Maxwell's style was built around swelling harmonic runs while painting complex melodies across an expansive canvass. Each harmony he creates is purposeful in form as well as function.
