What happens when a goddess falls for a mortal? The comic and tragic tale of Venus & Adonis, the first English opera by John Blow, composed for the Stuart court, tells the story of the love between the goddess Venus and the beautiful adolescent, Adonis. "Absence makes the heart grow fonder," Venus tells Adonis and at her urging, the reluctant Adonis leaves her bed for the hunt and is gored to death by a wild boar.
The earliest surviving English opera, it was presented as a masque for the entertainment of the court, Venus & Adonis is full of delightful music in the French style and includes dance tunes of the period. Jennifer Meller will be joined by Rachel Griffiths and Julie Lawton. We will have special appearances by Mill Valley Middle School students as little Cupids. Come join in our delight in presenting this special performance! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Performances are on Friday and Saturday, June 20 & 21, 8 to 9:30 PM, First Presbyterian Church San Anselmo, 72 Kensington Rd 94960. A reception follows the Friday June 20th performance.
