Chestnut Hill Walking Tour
Dr. Emily Cooperman will lead the first of a series of walking tours for the Chestnut Hill Historical Society. Dr. Cooperman will focus on the developments of Henry H. Houston, who transformed large areas of Chestnut Hill from farmland into a fashionable residential community in the 1880s and early 1890s. The tour will focus on the cultural institutions and residences of "Wissahickon Heights" and the works of Houston's principal architects, G. W. and W. D. Hewitt.
The tour will meet at the St. Martin's train station. (Chestnut Hill West line). The tour is FREE, donations to the Historical Society are welcomed. Space is limited and registration is required.
Emily T. Cooperman is an architectural and landscape historian and historic preservation consultant, serving as the principal of ARCH Preservation Consulting and as a senior consultant for Preservation Design Partnership. She earned both an M.S. in Historic Preservation and Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Cooperman has taught courses on architectural and landscape history at the University of Pennsylvania, Bryn Mawr College, and Philadelphia University, and has lectured extensively to scholarly and general audiences. Dr. Cooperman is a long-time resident of Chestnut Hill.
