Second Sunday Series - Purcell & Britten (feat. Mark Donnelly, Mark De Silva & Stephen Smith)
Britten & Purcell:  Canticles, Sonnets & Songs

Join us for an afternoon of classical music at the Roedde House. Two of the world's finest composers of vocal music are without doubt the Englishmen Benjamin Britten (whose centenary was celebrated last year), and his great predecessor and inspiration, Henry Purcell, who flourished 300 years earlier. On May 11th, two of BC's finest singers present a programme of songs, both sacred and secular, by these two masters - including a rarely-heard and intensely dramatic setting for tenor and countertenor of the biblical story of Abraham and Isaac, composed by Britten in 1951.

Mark Donnelly, countertenor

Mark Donnelly began his singing career as a chorister at St. Matthew's Church in Ottawa, his home city. Undergraduate and master's level musical studies took him to McGill, the University of Ottawa, and UBC; and since 2012 he has been a student of Nancy Argenta at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Prior to  pursuing his singing career full-time, Mark spent time in Africa where he focussed on several international humanitarian projects. He is also a keen sportsman and won his division in a recent half-marathon.

Mark De Silva, tenor

Mark De Silva received his early musical training in violin and voice in Malaysia and England. Since moving to Vancouver, he has performed with many of the city's finest ensembles, including Laudate, the Vancouver Cantata Singers, Amicus Duo, Borealis String Quartet, and the Turning Point Ensemble. He has performed, toured, and recorded extensively with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, and has appeared as soloist with the Victoria Philharmonic Choir, Vancouver Bach Choir, Richmond Chorus, and Vancouver Voices, with whom he sang the tenor roles in Bach's St. Matthew and St. John Passions and the Mass in B Minor.

Stephen Smith, pianist

Stephen Smith grew up in rural Nova Scotia, where he sang and played the piano from an early age. After initial studies in his home province in both piano and organ, he attended the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, and while there he participated in national and international competitions, winning numerous awards and distinctions. Since 1990, Stephen has lived in Vancouver, obtaining his doctoral degree in piano performance from UBC and contributing to the musical life of the city as a soloist, chamber musician, accompanist, teacher, conductor, and composer.
