Rising star Katrina Jia joins the MusicaNova Orchestra to play Robert Schumann's "Konzertstück Op. 92, Introduction and Allegro Appassionato for Piano and Orchestra" and MusicaNova Composition Fellow Tengku Irfan makes his conducting debut with the world premiere of his piece "Nocturne for String Orchestra."
Katrina Jia is a 14 year old freshman at Hamilton High School in Chandler AZ. She has studied piano with Fei Xu since age 5. When she was 8 years old, she won the World Piano Pedagogy (WPPC) Most Wanted Piano Competition, and at age 11the National First Prize of the 2012 Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Junior Piano Competition in New York along with the Outstanding Chopin Performance award from the Chopin Foundation of The United States. Her other achievements include winning first prize in the Arizona Youth Piano Competition and the Arizona Young Artist Piano Competition. Katrina was also a semifinalist in the International Institute for Young Musicians (IIYM) International Piano Competition. Besides piano, Katrina is a member of the Rio Salado swim team, and enjoys drawing and reading.
Sixteen year old MusicaNova Composition Fellow Tengku Irfan has dazzled the world as a composing and piano prodigy. Hailing from Malaysia, he is a student in composition and piano in the pre-college division at the Juilliard School in New York with a dual major in piano and composition when not performing all over the world.
Also on the program are the extraordinary Symphony No. 4 of Sibelius, a dark work that the composer considered his finest achievement and the contrasting brilliance of the Capriccio Espagnol of Rimsky-Korsakov, a brilliant showcase for the whole orchestra.
