Gene Kelly: Dance For The Common Man
Gene Kelly-Dancer, Actor, Singer, Choreographer, Director- always wanted to create an American dance style. He not only succeeded in doing this, but also created dance on film, as an art form, and in the process, advanced dance in the musical film genre. Film historian Philip Harwood returns to the Sky Room, and takes a look at the career of Gene Kelly, and with clips from such films as The Pirate, Words and Music, On The Town, An American In Paris, and Singin' In The Rain, we will see how Gene Kelly danced our hopes and our dreams, in addition to entertaining us for over half a century!
Philip Harwood has had a life-long passion for the arts, especially film. He is currently an Adjunct Lecturer in the Hutton House Lectures at LIU: C.W. Post, and teaches at the 92nd Street Y, and the JCC in Manhattan. He was Coordinator for Lifelong Learning at Queens College, where he also programmed the annual Summer Film Festival. He is a published author: his essay, Jack Benny In Hollywood, appears in the anthology, Well! Reflections On The Life And Career of Jack Benny, published by Bear Manor Media.
