Footloose presents A Murmured Tale
This is a musical adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's 19th century folktale, The Little Mermaid. Live original music, text and dance combine in this surrealist take on a classic. Presented by Footloose as part of the AIM: Artists in Motion series. Chthonic Theater, created by the three sisters Erika, Rachel and Chloe Tietjen, has grown to 17 cast members including live musicians, dancers, singers, actors and choreographer, Ishika Seth. The T Sisters, as they are known, will also be featured and have a history as a singing trio in clubs, cabarets, and community events.
This show came to life in the summer of 2007 and Chthonic Theater was born; (Greek word pronounced in English thonic means earth; in, under, beneath as in underworld deities or spirits). Chloe has a penchant for verse in Greek mythology and brings it to the mix with Rachels love and talent for bizarre visuals and outr costumes. Erika has a knack for harmonies and language. Added to these three, their good friend, Melanie Paterson, co-wrote the story and brought her own dynamic vision to animate the play.
Intrigued by the tragic, colorful nature of Andersens folktale, the company made it a musical, adding a helping of the comic and the absurd. A Murmured Tale has benefited from the talents and personalities of various casts of musicians, actors and dancers in earlier collaborations in Baltimore where it originated. Since the sisters moved to the Bay Area in 2008, excerpts have appeared at a wide variety of gigs and venues locally, including Footlooses Women on the Way Festival. This latest incarnation pulls the complete book and music together with a talented and lively crew that is sure to sell out all four shows and return at a larger venue.
