Novella Carpenter: Urban Farming
As the daughter of back-to-the-land hippies, Novella Carpenter grew up in rural Washington and Idaho loving nature and homegrown vegetables. But she also loved the energy, culture, and convenience of the city. So when she moved next to an abandoned lot in inner-city Oakland, California, Carpenter envisioned a small plot of urban self-sufficiency: heirloom tomatoes, a beehive, a chicken coop. Ten years later, that vision has bloomed into the full-blown Ghost Town Farm: The egg-laying hens led to turkeys, geese, and ducks, then to rabbits, goats, and even a couple of pigs. Carpenter, who attended the University of Washington, is a free-lance journalist and author of the memoir Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer. Presented by the Town Hall Center for Civic Life, with Elliott Bay Book Company.
