Nominated for an Academy Award in 2008 for best documentary film, The Garden, by Scott Hamilton Kennedy, is the story of South Central Farm, a community garden that was born of the healing process following the Los Angeles riots of 1992. From the ruins of an abandoned 14 acre field littered with garbage and drug paraphernalia, a sumptuous oasis of fresh food was created by determined urban farmers and a vital supportive community emerged therefrom. USA, 2008, 80 min., Unrated, DVD | Director: Scott Hamilton Kennedy | Best Documentary Academy Award Nominee The Long Island Community Agriculture Network (LICAN), built and manages the Gateway Park Community Garden in Huntington Station. Gateway Park Community Garden fulfills LICAN's mission of empowering local residents by "Connecting People to the Land" and providing the tools and support needed to build community and produce abundant food for the gardeners and their families. Gateway Park Community Garden shares many of the dynamics depicted in this documentary film including the transforming of a blighted area and the building of a diverse, vital community grounded in collaboration and good will. The garden also serves as an eco-literacy teaching center for local children and food from the garden is donated every week to local food shares and food banks.
