Sheep, Lambing and Kidding
Join us for a sheep-filled day of hands-on learning with two of the valley's veteran sheep farmers!

We'll start with a tour of the farm to see the flock in their rotational grazing areas, where they lamb on pasture. There will be about 150 lambs on the ground! We'll talk about portable fencing, livestock guarding dogs, herding dogs, and pasture management. Then we'll move to the barn to have a deeper discussion on husbandry practices around lambing (and kidding!). There will be opportunity to see and get some hands-on experience with tube and bottle feeding lambs, doing injections (SQ, IM, and IP), blood draws, correcting prolapses, drenching, hoof trimming, doing fecal egg counts with a microscope, parasite management, necropsy, and anything else that comes up in discussion!

The workshop begins at 12pm, but our monthly SnoValley Tilth farm tour will be held directly before this, beginning at 10am, so come early if youd like to join in that tour and potluck/social hour. Its a great chance to meet and chat with other local farmers and homesteaders.

Please expect to be moving around the farm and getting hands-on with the sheep. Dress accordingly for both the activity and the weather as this workshop will run rain or shine.

About your instructors:

Michelle Canfield works full time and (on the side) runs 100 Katahdin Hair Sheep ewes, raising 150 meat lambs and breeding stock each year on 37 acres in the Snohomish River Valley.

Alex Hagiepetros is the Livestock Manager for Carnation Farms, where she and her team run 100+ hair and wool sheep, as well as a 40 head beef finishing operation. Alex started farming in Oregon in 2017 after a lifetime of working in food service spurred her into a job working with animals in the great outdoors.
