ENAensemble presents Tongue River Music by Evan Kassof
Tongue River Music was started in the summer of 2024 while composer Evan Kassof and flutist Chelsea Meynig were in Dayton, Wyoming at the Tongue River Artist Residency. This month-long residency gave the time and space for hikes to the three headwaters of the Tongue River high in the Bighorn Mountains, the development of genuine friendships with Dayton locals, long-form recorded interviews, and of course slow, thoughtful composing. This piece uses field recordings, recordings of long-form interviews, and improvisations from the mountains as an electronic sonic landscape that the ensemble of voice (Nicole Renna), flute (Chelsea Meynig), and string quartet (Gryphon Quartet) play within. Written in collaboration with violinist Emily Denham, based in Casper Wyoming, the work is in some ways a sonic river of life in Wyoming, tying all the tributaries, creeks, and ditches of different experiences, memories, and paths of those involved into a single, unstoppable river.
