Tri City's Foundations 2025
Thank you for your interest in joining Tri City's Roller Derby Foundations course for 2025! Roller derby is a unique, fun sport and we are so excited to welcome you into the weird and wonderful community that surrounds it.
WHAT: This course runs once a week for 10 weeks and includes both on-skates and off-skates instruction, where you will learn the basics of how to roller skate for the purpose of playing the sport of roller derby. Topics covered include: skate basics, accelerating, stopping, turning around, crossovers and stride, giving and receiving hits, rules of the game, and more! This program focuses on the end goal of having you graduate and join our league in full-contact play.
WHEN: Thursday nights from 7:00 - 9:00 pm - Starting on Thurs, April 24th and ending Thurs, June 26th
WHERE: Grand River Arena located at 555 Heritage Dr, Kitchener
WHO: This program is open to everyone ages 18+ of all backgrounds and skill levels. You do not need to have any prior skating experience to join. Just come with a positive attitude and a willingness to fail & fall in order to learn and we will teach you all the rest from the ground up.
COST: Pricing will be $10/week for a total of $100 for the whole session, to be paid upfront by purchasing this ticket here on Brown Paper Tickets. There are no discounts or refunds for days that you do not/can not attend. In addition to this registration fee, you are required to purchase roller derby insurance from WFTDI Canada for the price of $50 which covers you for 1 year from the day you purchase it. This insurance is required of all roller derby athletes that play within the WFTDA at all times, you will not be allowed to start skating without it.
GEAR: Tri City is a full contact roller derby league that skates under the WFTDA Ruleset. To help protect your body while playing this highly physical game, there are some mandatory safety equipment requirements that you will need in order to join our Foundations program.
These include:
- Quad roller skates (no inline skates/blades)
- Helmet (skateboard or hockey style. No bicycle helmets)
- Wrist guards
- Knee pads
- Elbow pads
- Mouth guard (most roller derby athletes wear the Sisu brand, they are very thin and comfortable)
- Wear comfortable, athletic clothing
- Bring running shoes
- Bring a water bottle!
