This program is made possible by the Stanley R. Epstein Memorial Fund at the Yiddish Book Center.
Recorded for Columbia Records in 1955 under the musical supervision of jazz and klezmer legend Sam Musiker, Tanz!, a profoundly innovative and artistic recording featuring Musikers arrangements and both Musiker and the great Dave Tarras on clarinet, signified the readiness of a major record label to acknowledge the potential of the music we now call klezmer to attract a much wider audience. Unfortunately, that audience did not actually materialize until well over twenty years later. Hankus Netsky will discuss the music featured on the recording and why it took until well into the 1980s for it to be acknowledged as the landmark musical touchstone that it has become. (Michael Winograd will re-create Tanz! in concert on Saturday night.) _____________________________________________________________
