TAIKOPROJECT performs a modern American style of taiko that blends traditional Japanese drumming with an innovative and fresh aesthetic. Taiko drumming is not simply incredible music, but its also a form of dance and movement art, with the percussionists playing drums that range from small to massive.
Founded in 2000 in Los Angeles, TAIKOPROJECT has redefined modern American taiko, blending traditional Japanese drumming with an innovative and fresh aesthetic. The groups high-energy performances continue to captivate audiences by blending tradition and contemporary art forms.
PAC audiences may remember the group from their electrifying performance eight years ago. This March, TAIKOPROJECT is bringing their brand-new, full-length work, Benzaiten, to the PAC. Benzaiten upends gender stereotypes and challenges notions of femininity and masculinity in the taiko world. The performance blends percussive power and strength with grace and movement, and features dramatic costumes by a master kimono designer.
Benzaiten will highlight authentic taiko drums, bamboo flutes, marimba, koto ( Japanese harp), voice, and the groups mother drum, which weighs in at 35 pounds.
TAIKOPROJECT has performed around the country, with luminaries including Stevie Wonder and Peter Gabriel, on the Academy and Grammy awards, and has racked up many awards. They recorded music for the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics.
