San Francisco Choral Artists: RE-CYCLE, RE-VIEW, SING NEW! Saturday, June 20, 8PM
How do composers take materials at hand to fashion something new? Whether borrowed or stolen, for fun or propaganda, or desperate when deadlines loom, composers have long exploited existing musical resources.

The Choral Artists showcase this technique and premiere a new work offering a fresh look at 19th century Spanish songs. The new composition, "Lluvia/La Primavera" by Ted Allen, is based on the poem "Lluvia" combined with elements from "La Primavera," a song found in two collections of songs sung by 19th century Spanish residents of California.

The song collections were published in the 1920's by authors who transcribed the songs as they were sung by 80 and 90 year olds. "Lluvia" is by local poet Lucha Corpi. Composer-in-Residence Ted Allen is an Oakland resident and California native, and his musical associations have included the New York Ballet as well as Metallica and Nintendo.

The program includes other works using tunes and texts re-purposed in new forms with fresh harmony from plainchant to drinking songs. The winner of our 5th New Voices contest for composers under 30 is also featured. Magen Solomon, Artistic Director.
