Mirrors in Time
There are countless choral compositions, and almost as many texts and lyrics set to music. But composers revisit many texts time and time again, offering their "setting' of well known words. Each era and composer have their own take on what texts say and mean to them, and their contexts and communities. These revisitings and reimaginings are mirrors in time which reflect on the places and musical communities who write and perform these works. They also reflect on each other, like a prism that unfolds new ways of looking at old lyrics with new tonalities, lines, and sonorities. A new choral setting of a well known text can be like a new blossom or shoot on an established perennial in the garden. Join us as we explore a series of works set to the same texts by early music and contemporary composers.
Music includes works by Victoria, Lassus, Sandström, Coll, Martin, Purcell, and others.
