Turkish Belly Dance Workshops with Aslahan of Boston
Turkish 9/8 Two Ways - Belly Dance Workshops with Aslahan
11:00 AM-2:00 PM Turkish 9/8 on the stage - Oryantal combos with finger cymbals Turkish Oryantal dance as we know it today was born on the stages of Istanbul after the fall of the Ottoman empire. The 9/8 rhythms so beloved to Turks are one of the most unique features of Turkish belly dance shows. We'll explore how to perform belly dance moves with Turkish feeling, and how to marry them to the 9/8 rhythm, plus some of the pelvic- and foot- work inherited from Romani dance. Finally we'll add finger cymbals for an Istanbul-stage-worthy combination.
2:00-4:00 PM Turkish 9/8 in the streets - Romani combos with gestures Turkish Romani dance is the mother of Turkish Oryantal - the earthy, expressive dance of the Roma people of Turkey is done in the streets and in living rooms, at festivals, weddings, and any time friends gather and music is played. We'll start with posture and pelvic articulations, then move to the lively footwork this dance is known for. Then we'll learn some of those delicious Romani gestures, and how to execute them with the right feeling, before mixing them back into the moves already learned to create combos you can use.
