LIVING
An ordinary man (Bill Nighy), reduced by years of oppressive office routine to a shadow existence, makes a supreme effort to turn his dull life into something wonderful. Great artists often turn to one another for inspiration and universal themes. In 1886 Leo Tolstoy wrote one of the worlds great novellas, The Death of Ivan Ilyich telling the story of a high-court judge in 19th-century Russia and his sufferings and death from a terminal illness. Inspired by Tolstoy Akira Kurosaw created a masterpiece, his movie Ikiru examining the struggles of a terminally ill Tokyo bureaucrat and his final quest for meaning. Now Oliver Hermanus a young, brilliant South African director has given us Living a quiet tale of an ordinary 1950s London man.facing the end of his life. Bill Nighy gives a powerful, deeply felt performance expressing the human emotions of an authentic life.
