Butoh Bufon Performance Project
Butoh is a form of Japanese dance theatre that includes actions, techniques and motivations for dance, performance, or movement.Bufon is a broad performance realm rooted in satire and mockery. Both butoh dance and bufon Theater often use white make-up on the performers exposed body parts, erasing selfness & becoming a solid being. Inner images float up to the skin surface, some beautiful, some grotesque in their range of expression. Their theatrical effect is to draw pictures in the theater frame.
These performances are the culmination of a workshop series taught by Hiroko Tamano and Txi Whizz.
Hiroko Tamano is a dancer, choreographer and teacher of butoh dance. Butoh is a modern dance form that arose in the 1950's in Japan. It is a discipline with strong traditions - culturally, physically, and spiritually. Hiroko Tamano is a first generation butoh dancer. As such she is steeped in its origin, tradition and development. Hiroko has been influential in shaping the butoh dance form we know today. Butoh dance often uses white make-up on the performers exposed body parts and butoh physically explores both the beautiful and the grotesque in its range of expression
Txi Whizz, professional theatre clown and co-director of Camp Winnarainbow for Adults, is an interdisciplinary artist. Since 1968, Txi has made her mark internationally in the theatre, as a designer, performer, director, writer, mask-maker, and innovative workshop teacher. Txi creates and collaborates in the creation of large multi-disciplinary events. She is a practitioner of physical theatre, butoh dance, dance improvisation, clown & bufon. Txi is a dedicated perpetrator of Fools Theatre.
Hiroko Tamano and Txi Whizz have been experimenting with interrelating their two disciplines almost since they met. In August 2013 they made a firm commitment to work with young performers to teach their respective disciplines and to devise an interdisciplinary piece for performance. This piece was performed once in Vancouver with Hiroko, Txi and two of their students at Mascall Dance studio. In August 2013 Hiroko and Txi crossed their two disciplines in development, process and performance. In May 2014 the master artists propose deepening their commitment to experimentation with Butoh x Bufon.
