Dr. Elisabeth Clyne:
Lizzy is a project geophysicist with Tetra Tech. They hold a BS degree from the University of Michigan Dearborn in physics, a MS degree from The College of William and Mary Virginia Institute of Marine Science, and a PhD from Penn State in geosciences. They have published research on paleoseismic sedimentology and glaciology, taught climate and cryoscience at Lewis and Clark college, and worked as a K-12 environmental educator in several municipalities.

Abstract

Geophysical Methods are a cost-effective way to gather initial information about a project or site without having to break ground. They can cover a wide surficial and/or vertical area and fill knowledge gaps between expensive ground-truth methods like boreholes.

A wide swath of geophysical methods exist which can provide many different forms of information about the subsurface. Seismic methods allow the assessment of seismic velocities and subsurface structure, providing insight into geotechnical parameters, excavation rippability, and layer interfaces. The gravity method can capture density variations related to geologic changes and voids. Electrical resistivity methods yield insight into subsurface resistivity changes, providing information on groundwater, geologic structure, and soil resistivity. Various electromagnetic methods can be used to image large- and small-scale geologic changes or subsurface objects such as pipes, tanks, cisterns, landfills and more.

This talk will give an overview of how different geophysical methods can provide tailored datasets for a myriad of different consulting projects.
