FOR LOVE OF GOATS: Jonathan Richman, Don Paul and Hamid Drake
A special evening of readings and music by Jonathan Richman, Hamid Drake, and Don Paul!
Jonathan Michael Richman, singer/songwriter and guitarist who founded The Modern Lovers, will be at The Emerald Tablet along with Hamid Drake and Don Paul to read from translations (English and Italian) of poets and songwriters who have inspired them.
Richman has recently translated the Italian writers Pier Paolo Pasolini, Alberto Masada, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti's biographer.
Hamid Drake has played on more than 200 albums since he began to record in 1978. He's performed with Fred Anderson, Iva Bittova, Marilyn Crispell, Don Cherry, Herbie Hancock, Hera, Kidd Jordan, David Murray, William Parker, the Rova Saxophone Quartet, Adam Rudolph, Archie Shepp, Wayne Shorter, and many more. Whether working with drum-set or hand-percussion, Hamid Drake is one of the most admired, eye-opening, jaw-dropping, and spiritually affecting drummers alive.
Don Paul moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to New Orleans in January 2006 to join Common Ground in helping with New Orleans' post-flood recovery. In the 1990s he produced albums by India Cooke, Lisle Ellis, Paul Plimley, Glenn Spearman, and Ustad Salamat and Shafqat Ali Khan. "One of the Bay Area's artistic treasures," Wanda Sabir wrote then. Among others who have praised Paul as a writer and/or performer over the past 35 years are Jeannette Armstrong, John Aldridge, Malcolm Cowley, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Matt Gonzalez, Tillie Olsen, Derk Richardson, David Rubien, Wanda Sabir, John Sinclair, and April Smith. More here and here.
Paul lived at 1852 Stockton for 25 years. There he wrote more than 15 books and led or produced more than 15 albums and at last succeeded in establishing a tree along the wind-swept sidewalk outside his multi-postered front windows.
