These 'NPR regulars' have graced numerous venues, festivals and showcase clubs and have received incredibly enthusiastic audience response!Harmonious Wail, a Madison, Wisconsin-based group, formed in 1987 and has been a local favorite ever since. The trio offers a blend of continental jazz, swing and Gypsy Jazz (also known as Gypsy Swing) honoring the late Django Reinhardt, who is credited with creating the unique style of music in France during the 1930s. The band also displays a sense of humor portrayed in hits like "The Vegan Zombie's Lament."
Founder Sims Delaney-Potthoff, who boasts of wearing the same pair of Converse Chuck Taylors for 30 years, studied for seven years with legendary jazz mandolinist Jethro Burns. He plays the mandolin, 1937 Gibson Tenor Guitar (tuned as an octave mandolin), sings, writes, and arranges music for the group.
Joining Sims are his wife, Maggie Delaney-Potthoff, providing her captivating vocals and percussion (she plays a mic'd box), and the 2012 MAMA award winner for best bassist of the year, Jeff Weiss.
Harmonious Wail has released seven albums in the past 20 years. They have won several Madison Area Music Association awards including Best Jazz CD, Favorite Jazz Band, Best World Artist, and Best Instrumentalist.
