St Catherine's Presents - Samantha Knights QC
Shamima,15 at the time, was one of a number of East London schoolgirls who went to Syria in 2015, encouraged and groomed online by ISIS supporters to travel there. She was married off to an Islamic fighter soon after arriving (a marriage which by law she could not consent to and which is illegal under international law as she was a child) and went on to have three children, none of whom survived beyond infancy. In 2019 she was stripped of her UK citizenship by the decision of the Home Secretary on national security grounds and remains detained in a Syrian camp run by the Syrian Democratic Forces controlled by armed guards, stateless and with a very uncertain future. Samantha will talk about Shamima's appeals and the challenges of a case involving closed evidence hearings and in circumstances where her legal team are unable to communicate with her. In August this year Shamima was refused permission to appeal to the UK Supreme Court; her route now lies to the European Court of Human Rights. Samantha Knights KC (St Cat's 1981-87) is a barrister at Matrix, London and specialises in the area of civil liberties, public law and refugee and trafficking law in particular. She is currently instructed in the Post Office Horizon Inquiry.
The event starts at 7.30pm, the bar will be open from 6.45pm. The event will close at c.9.15pm.
