Portal Players Dramatic Society proudly presents our final production of our 2013/14 season: "Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean".
Derek and Debra Burke direct this production of Ed Graczyk's 1976 play which straddles two time periods1955 and 1975and tells the story of an all-female fan club called the "Disciples of James Dean" which meets at a Woolworths five-and-dime store in McCarthy, Texas.
In 1955, when they were teenagers, James Dean is filming "Giant" in Marfa, not far from where the eponymous "five and dime" stands. As middle-aged women, they reunite in 1975 to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of Dean's death, and the story explores their memories and shared experiences, revealing the truth behind their complicated lives. One of them, an extra in the film, has a child whom she says was conceived with Dean during the shoot. The ladies' congenial reminiscences mingle with flashbacks to their youth; then the arrival of a stunning but familiar stranger sets off a series of confrontations that smash their delusions and expose bitter disappointments.
The material provides a rich playground for some of Portal Players' strongest female actors: Teresa Mulligan, Yvette Deveau, Belinda Williams, Carrera Schroeder, Melanie Anderson, Melissa Lowe, and Ashley Romuld. Newcomers to our stage Evelyn Ridsdale and Randy Humchitt complete this dynamic ensemble cast who deftly slip between decades to bring this story to life.
Produced by Brent Ronning, Stage Manager Peggy Geismar, Set Design Chris Doman & Peter Kulich, Costume Design Marina Connah, Set Dresser Jessica Burns, Lighting Nathan Satterlee, Sound Design Chris Donaldson.
The production is Portal Players official entry in the North Island Zone Drama Festival on Thursday, May 22 at the Village Theatre in Qualicum. It begins its three-week limited run at the Capitol Theatre in Port Alberni on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm, opening May 1 and closing May 17.
