"Chinatown is a Site of Resistance Abolition Photo Exhibition Teach-in
Teach in description:

124-125 White Street has been a jail site since the 1820s. When they ran low on beds the city demolished the current jail and a larger one was built on top. The jails at 124-125 White St had various names (Bridewell Prison, The Halls of Justice, The Tombs) but each time they grew bigger and taller. The citys current construction of the worlds tallest jail is a continuation of this pattern. How have communities reacted to and resisted jail construction throughout history? This teach-in will begin with a history of the area now known as Chinatown, from the ancestral home of the Lenape people to Chinese immigration in the 1830s. Each of these communities has a unique and powerful legacy of resistance and resilience. What do these histories of resistance have to teach us? How can we use the past/present and build towards an abolitionist future? What might an abolitionist future look like in Chinatown?

Through this time we hope to give participants space to explore these and other questions with each other. In the face of rapid displacement and ongoing construction, we hope to provide space for reflection and imagination of an abolitionist future in Chinatown.
