ROTTURE PRESENTS: AMANDA BLANK
Amanda Blank's musical output has had quite a varied effect on listeners, ranging from shock to accolades. Though the frank sexual demeanor present in much of her work has taken some by surprise, coming from a confident, outspoken female it is ultimately empowering, relevant, and fun as hell. At the root of it is a woman looking to take listeners to a place where excitement and unhindered self-expression is accepted as the norm. Blank is part of a loose collective of musicians that include Spank Rock, Santogold, and Diplo. She takes influences as diverse as 90's R&B, 80's dance, indie, new wave and brit pop and mixes them into her own type of double dutch, defiantly taking the rope out of the hands of haters and using it against them. You can hear the rhythm of the pavement and the summer street chants on every track. Much of her music is built around the Baltimore Club sound: uptempo bass heavy beats draped in brash and grimy textures, with Blanks' staccato raps, delivered in a rapid fire clip, providing the perfect compliment. Amanda took the world by storm with her contribution to the track "Bump" from Spank Rock's 2006 breakout album YoYoYoYoYo. Her verse is a serious exercise in lyrical acrobatics as she effortlessly flips from a steady swagger to a barrage of triplets and back again, running circles around the beat. Collaborations with Ghostface Killah and M.I.A. have also borne her unique stamp, while her contribution to the Eli Escobar and Doug Grayson remix of Britney Spears' hit single "Gimme More" is a bona fide talon swipe to the face of the cultural elite. Her songs have also appeared on the HBO series Life Support and Entourage as well as CBS televisions' CSI:NY. Philadelphia born and bred, Amanda was raised among no less than six sisters and one brother in a row house in Germantown. Her parents instilled her with the values of individuality and outspokeness. A quick glimpse at her interests conveys the dynamic nature of Amanda's character, ranging from the radically raw to the sentimentally sweet. From her tastes in music (My Bloody Valentine, Man Man, Santogold, Antony and the Johnsons, etc.) to visual art (Jayson Musson, Aubrey Beardsley) to fashion (Ny Chorm), she gravitates from the sensual and striking to the fun and unpredictable. Her desire to make an impact and entertain is felt throughout her music, both in her work as an MC and as a member of her bizzaro pop group SweatHeart.
