West African Dance, Drum & Textile Workshop
(ages 8-12 and 13-18) For the third summer in a row Jamal Jackson and members of his dance company will teach West African dance to children and teens at PS21. This year the workshop has been expanded to a full morning of dancing, drumming, and textile design. Workshop participants investigate traditional West African dance, a highly expressive, physical, art which aims to create interconnectedness within the community. The workshops are accompanied by live drumming. Participants also learn about West African textile design from fiber artist Susannah White by creating pieces using traditional dye-resist techniques. Each day ends with a drumming lesson from the Company's talented drummers. Drums are provided for those who do not have one. On Friday the workshop participants present a public performance. $175/$150 members for the week-long day camp program. Generous scholarships are available. Pre-registration is required.
