Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and Incidental Music for Shakespeare's Plays
PS21 and Concerts in the Village (CITV) are collaborating for the first time to present an ambitious program of music by 17th century English composer Henry Purcell. The evening's highlight is a semi-staged concert performance of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, a masterpiece of the Baroque age and first significant opera in English. CITV's Artistic Director David Smith directs the Broad Street Choral and soloists Amanda Boyd (Dido), Jon Morrell (Aeneas), Kameryn Luen (Belinda), Vicki Smith (The Second Woman) and Katie Roppolo (The Sorceress) and a chamber orchestra, drawing upon some of the finest instrumentalists in eastern New York. In addition to Dido and Aeneas, the program includes selections from Purcell's incidental music for Shakespeare's The Tempest and Midsummer Night's Dream.
A reception for the audience and artists will follow the performance. Tickets: $30/$25 members/$18 students
