Yom HaShoah
On Sunday, May 4th, 2014, the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine will host a very special Yom HaShoah: Holocaust Day of Remembrance service and concert at the Augusta Civic Center from 1 to 4 p.m. featuring the Portland String Quartet.
The program will begin with a traditional ceremony of remembrance featuring clergy from Jewish and Christian faiths. Following the brief ceremony, the Portland String Quartet will play a program of music by Mendelssohn, composers from the Theresienstadt concentration camp and the Swiss born Ernest Bloch.
The Portland String Quartet was presented with the Chamber Music America's Acclaim Award for 2013 in recognition of outstanding service and cultural contributions to the community. Cycles of the chamber music of Ernest Bloch, George Whitefield Chadwick and Walter Piston have earned the Portland String Quartet awards in "Best Chamber Music Recordings" from The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Boston Globe. Their recordings span the literature from J.S. Bach's Art of the Fugue to the works of living composers.
The planned May 4th concert includes:
Capriccio Feliby Mendelssohn String Quartet No.1 by Ernest Bloch
The TerezĂn Collection: Praeludium, Op.12a by Viktor Kohn In The Shadow Of Your Wings by Grunfeld/Schul Gavotte by Egon Ledec Song Without Wordsby Frantisek Domazlicky
