Claudia Russell and the Folk Unlimited Orchestra
Arena Theater proudly presents folksinger/songwriter Claudia Russell and the Folk Unlimited Orchestra. Russell and her band play an eclectic folk music with traces of all Claudia's musical loves--blues, western swing, rock and country--drawing from original compositions, obscure gems, folk and pop classics and contributions from her many talented friends. The Folk Unlimited Orchestra is Bruce Kaplan on mandolin, guitar and vocals, Mark Petrella on string bass, and Carl Byron on keyboards.
Claudia Russell is an outstanding singer/songwriter who has shared stages with Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer, Steve Forbert, Tish Hinojosa, Kris Kristoffersen, Willie Nelson, Darryl Purpose, Peter Rowan, Rosalie Sorrels and Bill Staines, among others.
As a solo artist, Claudia plays a style all her own, Claudia's performances are truly heartfelt and entertaining. Using humor, personal stories and her "Who me?" attitude, Claudia quickly bonds with audiences, winning them over with her powerful voice and signature guitar voicings.
Boston's WUMB FM named Claudia the Best New Artist of 2000, and she has twice been selected as a finalist in the Kerrville New Folk songwriting competition. Claudia was a 2004 finalist in the Sisters Folk Festival Songwriters contest in Bend Oregon and the 2002 KRCL Songwriting contest in Salt Lake City.
Besides writing evocative songs, Claudia is known for her vocal talent. She is an expressive and versatile singer, as at home on a soulful ballad as a Buddy Holly style romp. A musicians' musician, Russell has appeared as a backup singer on recordings by some of the best songwriters on the LA independent music scene including Daryl Purpose, Alan Whitney, Allison MacLeod, Anny Celsi, Jenny James, Chad Watson and Mark Governor. Since moving to Berkeley with her husband/partner Bruce Kaplan, she has appeared often at Freight and Salvage.
Claudia's newest CD is Live Band Tonight, a collection of live recordings from performances at the Freight and Salvage, Live From Studio One and Folkscene, the longest running Folk radio show in history, hosted by Roz and Howard Larman. According to Rich Warren of Sing Out magazine: "Claudia Russell is a great live performer and Live Band Tonight proves that. Her band...Let's just say they're hot. Connect them to the power grid and they'd light up a medium-sized town...This CD is as musically solid as they come and in the world of obligatory live CDs, Live Band Tonight shines."
