Bay Area favorites, the Vinaccesi Ensemble, return to northern Italy at the Berkeley Fringe Festival & Exhibition this June, for a program of delightful and rarely heard Italian madrigals and canzonettas by the most famous Baroque Jewish composer, Salamone Rossi hebreo of Mantua and psalm settings from Venetian Benedetto Marcello's monumental Estro poetico-armonico.
Although Rossi is best known today for his Hebrew settings of the Song of Solomon, he was writing at the cusp of the transition from Renaissance to Baroque, and wrote some wonderful madrigals, canzonettas, and monodies in Italian, which are rarely performed. We're pairing a generous handful of those with a couple of gorgeous psalm settings by Benedetto Marcello, one of which includes a Sephardic melody from the time. Marcello collected Sephardic and German Hebrew melodies, as he was an early ethnomusicologist of sorts.
