*Co-Star Geoffrey Arend to Attend* 500 DAYS OF SUMMER - USA - 2009 - 95 Minutes - Director: Marc Webb
Full of seductive promise, this is a magic carpet of a Fest opener. 500 Days of Summer has enough class to grace the "14 Days" of the festival and more, and perhaps go on into the hot days of July to become the hit of the season. "Stylish feature debut by longtime music-video director Marc Webb goes out of its way to take an unconventional approach to telling one of the oldest stories in the book", commented Variety's Todd McCarthy, "only to prevail by embracing the fact that the fundamental things apply -- a cute leading couple, a rooting interest in their welfare and a genuine feeling for heartbreak and the belief that life must go on." Without giving too much away, its comic perspective conveys the number of days (500) that elapse from when Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) first lays eyes on Summer (Zooey Deschanel) to when the time comes for their final goodbye.
Told in non-linear fashion, from a male point of view, the story opens on Day 488, and numbers keep popping up on screen to indicate where the encounter is going and where it has been. Tom, a shy-type architect drop-out, works in a hip downtown L.A. office writing inane greeting cards. Enter new-hire, the alluring, blue-eyed Summer, assigned as his assistant. Tom's a goner. For Summer, love is a fantasy, for Tom it's destiny. But the chemistry works in this postmodern love story -- that what we want, we can't have; in this case the audience can have two dynamic performances from Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. Film captures mercurial moods of love with a bring-down-the-house musical finale in a central L.A. park, and sets the stage for the handful of recession-proof romantic comedies to be discovered in the fest. Witty script by writers Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. Cinematographer, Eric Steelberg. Cast includes Matthew Gray Gubler, Geoffrey Arend. (Film courtesy of Fox Searchlight.)
