Set in the American South of 1964, VIOLET follows the journey of a young woman accidentally scarred by her father. Violet travels by bus from her home in North Carolina to a televangelist in Oklahoma she believes will cure her. She meets several interesting characters along the way, including a young black soldier who helps Violet learn about real beauty and love. One of the most acclaimed Off Broadway shows of the 1990s, VIOLET is currently enjoying a Tony Award-nominated Broadway run, starring Sutton Foster. Spinning Tree Theatre is one of the first regional theatres to produce VIOLET following its limited Broadway engagement.

Susannah, a song collector for the Library of Congress, travels the country seeking little-known melodies. When she encounters Pearl in a Texas prison, she discovers a musical treasure trove rooted in the African tradition. Pearl must decide whether or not to give away her ancestors' songs for a chance at her own freedom. Music unites strangers in a powerful story that explores America's racial divisions and the attempts of two women to bridge them. Written by Kansas City's own Frank Higgins, Spinning Tree Theatre is proud to offer the Kansas City premiere of BLACK PEARL SINGS!
