Olav Hauge, Poet (shown with Lorca, The Sea Stops Moving)
LORCA: In line with Spains 70th anniversary commemorations of the world-shattering 1939 Spanish Civil War, the film recounts the life and death of famous poet/dramatist Federico Garcia Lorca (Blood Wedding, Yerma), with new archive revelations in the alleged murder at the hands of dictator Gen. Francisco Francos fascist regime. In his contested past, the works of Lorca (1898-1936) were banned until 1953 and could not be openly discussed until after Francos death, l975. New archive footage enhances the film dossier. (In Spanish; English subtitles). OLAV HAUGE: One of Norway's greatest poets, Olav H. Hauge (1908-1994) lived most of his life in isolation among the mountainous fjords as a farmer and orchard-keeper. Inspired by world literature, he began publishing his modernist poems at the age of 38. Haunted by depression, Hauge spent long periods in a mental hospital, where he avoid being lobotomized because the hospital's doctor in charge thought he had some special gifts that he didn't want to interfere with. This new portrait of this troubled and intense artist "is like a beautiful poem in itself." (Norwegian Film Institute comment) Many of Hauge's poems have been translated by Minn. author Robert Bly.) Director Nielsen, noted for her young people's films, is from the same village, Ulvik, as Hauge. (In Norwegian; English subtitles)
