Summer Makers Camp - Nature Week
Art, Nature and the Handmade with Elise Bothel
Monday - Friday, 9am-4pm | $250 Full week or $65 per day (see below for details)
An exploration of nature as inspiration, subject, and a source of materials. This session focuses on the creation of tools and mediums using items found in nature as well as using natural and handmade materials to create unique works of art. Projects include natural weaving, felting, natural dying, handmade paintbrushes, handmade paper, handmade paint/dye, handmade sketchbooks and botanical illustrations. Families and friends are invited to our mini art show on the last day of camp on Friday, August 8th, 4-5pm.
Monday August 4 | Paper Making and Weaving Start the week out by learning how to make your own handmade paper using collected and recycled paper. Campers will also learn weaving techniques. What to bring: Apron or spock, bagged lunch and water bottle.
Tuesday August 5 | Personal Paintbrushes Have you ever wanted to make your own painting tool? Well, now you can! Using found and collected materials, campers will assemble their very own handmade paintbrushes. Inspired by the Biddeford landscape, campers will create ink paintings and drawings using their handmade implements. What to bring: Apron or spock, bagged lunch and water bottle.
Wednesday August 6 | Felting Campers will experiment with wet felting techniques to create abstract compositions and landscapes. What to bring: Bagged lunch and water bottle.
Thursday August 7 | Natural Painting and Drawing Inspired by natural ingredients and nature, campers will use natural paints to create still-lifes and botanical illustrations. What to bring: Apron or spock, bagged lunch and water bottle
Friday August 8 | Prints and Pages It's a printmaking day! Explore monoprinting and vegetable printing to create one of a kind prints. Campers will also learn bookmaking and binding techniques to create their own books. What to bring: Bagged lunch and water bottle.
Elise Bothel is an artist and art educator from Portland, Maine. She received her BFA in Sculpture from Maine College of Art in 2010. She returned to MECA in 2012 to pursue Art Education, and was awarded her MAT in 2013. She has spent her last year as the art teacher for Longfellow Elementary School, in Portland, Maine.
Her areas of study have included figurative sculpture, metalsmithing and jewelry, felting, bronze casting, drawing, photography, and ceramics. She has a passion for many materials. Her artwork made from wool, beeswax, bronze, and clay connects her to the Earth and satisfies a longing for nature. She is grateful to be a part of Engine's first summer art camp series, and continues her pursuit of quality art education and personal artistic expression.
