The AIA Orange County Healthcare Committee Presents:
Hoag Hospital Irvine Campus Expansion: The Creation of a Wellness Village
Attendees will be presented with an overview of the $1.2 billion hospital campus expansion program as realized through the creation of a pedestrian scaled, wellness village concept. The campus master plan was developed through extensive client engagement and executive leadership visioning sessions. Key topics to be covered will include targeted patient-focused care via acuity specific institutes, hospital seismic compliance, the projects overall sustainability framework and the implementation of biophilic design via pedestrian access points, terraces and courtyards. This truly significant campus expansion program is being realized through the addition of an expanded campus loop road that adds (2) 5-level parking structures, (2) significant additions to the existing main hospital building a) Front Entrance Addition and b) East Pavilion Addition; (2) North Campus Inpatient hospital wings that are connected back to the existing hospital via a patient/service north tunnel; and (3) Hospital Support Buildings a) West Logistics Building as connected to the main hospital by a west tunnel for access to an expanded Service Yard and b) (2) North Campus Outpatient Buildings that complement each new Inpatient Wing.
Learning Objectives:
Team Culture A variety of project delivery methods are being implemented to realize the campus expansion. The presentation will explain how each unique method (traditional design-bid-build; progressive design-build and selective trade design-assist contracts are being utilized to achieve best value for the Owner. Sustainability Measures The design team is focused on creating a health and wellness village that leverages nature, climate, indoor-outdoor connections, natural light, and views to elevate the patient and caregiver experience. Key points that address the following topics will be discussed:
a.Wellbeing b.Building Performance c.Human Experience
Seismic Compliance All OSHPD-1 permits have been prepared to comply with the State of Californias Senate Bill 1953 mandate being applied to all general acute care hospital facilities. One of the main provisions of SB 1953 is the development of earthquake or seismic performance categories, specifically the Structural Performance Categories (SPC) as found in Article 2 and the Nonstructural Performance Categories (NPC) as found in Article 11. These include seismic performance categories for new and existing general acute care hospitals facilities in various sub-gradations, i.e., from those capable of providing services to the public after a seismic event to those at significant risk of collapse and that represent a danger to the public.
ADA Accessibility The Hoag Hospital Campus Expansion Program has been designed to provide for the minimum code requirements as related to providing for suitable disabled parking stalls, compliant access paths of travel into and out of all structures, bathrooms and all other disabled access provisions as enforced through the plan review and permit processes implemented by both the City of Irvine and HCAI for all new construction and renovation work campuswide.
