Bent Mentor Showcase 2006: Featuring Dorothy Allison
It's time again for the annual Bent Student Showcase and Mentor award show! This year Bent is featuring the incomparable Dorothy Allison, who has won both critical acclaim and mainstream success as an out lesbian writer. Proclaimed "one of the finest writers of her generation" by the Boston Globe and "simply stunning" by the New York Times Book Review. This, the fifth annual, Bent Mentor Award Showcase is to be held October 13th and 14th at the Seattle First United Methodist Church.
The showcase is a chance to see over 40 current Bent students perform alongside a writer whose work they look up to and have chosen to honor. These students' works are generating much attention both locally and nationally, and they are a force to be reckoned with.
Allison will also be facilitating a writing workshop hosted by Bent. The workshop is a low-impact high support environment for students and communities members to interact in a more intimate setting with Allison while getting advice and insight into the subject of writing. The workshop is Saturday afternoon, 1-3pm, at the church also. (See the listing under brownpapertickets.)
As one Bent student puts it: "The showcase means so much to us students; it is a culmination of our work individually and as a community. It is such a meaningful opportunity, both in terms of access to such a large audience and to be perform alongside one of our recognized and respected queer writing mentors." Past mentors have included: Sini Anderson, Ivan E. Coyote, Michelle Tea, Justin Chin, Buddy Wakefiled and Juba Kalamka.
Bent was founded in August of 2000 by Seattle based writer and performer Tara Hardy. The mission of Bent is to promote and encourage written and spoken word among LGBTIQTS people and within our communities. Bent is the only writing institute of its kind in the country.
