Continuous Simulation Modelling: A review and practical application
This BHS lunchtime webinar will focus on the hydrological method of continuous simulation modelling. The Environment Agency commissioned Jacobs in 2023 to undertake a review of the application of CS in UK flood hydrology to enable evidence-based guidance to be given for its use in future modelling studies. This review found a consensus for CS in flood hydrology. The Environment Agencys Flood Estimation Guidelines already provide recommendations as to when CS should be considered. This review found no need to fundamentally modify these recommendations, but does identify several considerations around data, the rainfall and rainfall-runoff models, calibration, routing and model runs that should be considered when selecting an approach.
Donna Wilson (Environment Agency) and Claire Samuel (Jacobs) will provide an overview of the review process and study findings. The review does not make any recommendations on how to undertake a CS study.
Paul Wass (JBA) presents an overview of one of the largest CS studies undertaken in the UK, of the Thames catchment to Teddington, approximately 10,000 km2. The CS model has been set up to investigate flood risk mitigation measures within this hydrologically complex catchment as part of the Environment Agencys Thames Valley Flood Scheme (TVFS).
