The VENT - 4/20/14
THE VENT STORYTELLING SERIES at STAGE WERX THEATRE: Where true stories are told by superb comedians, acclaimed writers and "ordinary" people with extraordinary stories who do just that. They vent. Though mostly it's the funny kind of venting. The series occurs on the third Sunday of every month in a theater that contains just 70 seats. Seventy very comfortable theater seats on banked rows. The storytellers do not use notes or scripts or even microphones. This series attracts the best storytellers in town. As well as the most enthusiastic and responsive audiences. Which pleases the producers. To no end.
> CICI WOO "Why Does This Monk Want To Be My Facebook Friend?" -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cici has just made big changes in her life. She is now a coach and retreat leader, and she held a benefit storytelling event for the mental health agency that has helped her mom. But she is perplexed when she receives a Facebook friend invitation...from a monk. Is she ready to be enlightened on Facebook?
> ANDY PECK "My Fairy Grandfather" -------------------------------------------------------------------------- On my 38th birthday, getting out of bed is like stepping up to the free throw line facing opposing fans -- "lo-ser! fag-got! fail-ure!" The only way to shut them up is to make the shot. Except, what if it's better to miss in this lousy metaphor? Thank whatever put us on this puny, miserable planet that I still have my fairy grandfather, Rusty Tripledouble.
> SUSIE DAVIS "Prince, Prudishness, and Piano Lessons" -------------------------------------------------------------------------- While working withSheilaE and Prince as a backing musician in the 80s, Susie has to come face to face with her discomfort about singing sexually explicit song lyrics on stage. A treatise on her personal history with dirty songs ensues, with Susie accompanying herself on accordion.
> DOUG CORDELL "Breaking in My New Girlfriend" -------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's a hot New York City summer and Doug's stuck in a tenement shoebox apartment without air conditioning, his sanity hanging by a thread. When low, pulsing music seeps through the wall from the apartment next door late one night it threatens to drive him over the edge. Whoever the new neighbor is isn't answering his knocks on the door or more extreme efforts to get their attention. By the third night it's driven him to the brink like the Tell-Tale Heart with a German techno beat! What will he have to do to make the music stop? What'll happen if he goes too far? And who might suddenly appear at his door looking very unhappy?
> MOLLY KELLY "Do Ask, Don't Tell" -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Radically out, and recently married, Molly takes a business trip that has her quickly playing the gender-neutral pronoun game. Who is she anyway?! With a new commitment to staying true to herself, can she make it through the Delhi Airport unscathed?
