Afriky Lolo, founded and led by Diádié Bathily, is a West-African dance non-profit corporation that is committed to bringing West African dance and culture to the St. Louis, Missouri, community through teaching and performing.
Bathily is a Master dancer from the Cote dIvoire, West Africa. He immigrated to the United States in 1998. He has a strong personal and professional desire to share the beauty, culture and passion of West African dance with Americans, especially African Americans. Afriky Lolos mission is to share and celebrate West African dance with local, national, and international communities. They do so through classes, performances, workshops, and summer camps, volunteering and for-profit events. Through dance, they bring the rich heritage of African performance to children, teens, adults, and seniors of all levels and abilities.
Our show, The Goddess ZAOULI LIVES, is a folktale of the Gouro (or Guro) people of central Ivory Coast, adapted for stage by Afriky Lolos artistic director and choreographer, Diadié Bathily. The story centers on the coming of age of Djela Lou Zaouli (danced by assistant director Rokya Ouattara), when her father proclaims that she is eligible to be married, with the stipulation that he must approve of potential suitors. Come see what happens to the Princess as this tale follows her as she suffers through the growing pains of life and love. While her challenges and disappointments are heart-wrenching, the story reveals a message of peace, forgiveness and compassion.
