Landscapes/Durations/Distances: Films of Lois Patiño
Patiños work, like Peter Hutton's might be said to fuse ethnography with philosophical ruminations via the singular aesthetics of cinema... Tony Pipolo, Artforum
On the occasion of premiering his feature work Costa da Morte (Coast of Death) at the San Francisco International Film Festival (screening May 2 & 3), San Francisco Cinematheque welcomes Spanish filmmaker Lois Patiño in his first Bay Area appearance, presenting a selection of earlier short works. Frequently shot from "seemingly impossible godlike perspective[s]," and sensuously depicting the varied landscapes of his native Spain, Patiño's films of human figures moving through landscapes evoke mountainous immensities and overlap human, geologic and even planetary timeframes simultaneously. Works to screen include Na vibración (Into the Vibration), En el Movimiento del Paisaje (In Landscape's Movement), PaisajeDistancia (DistanceLandscape), Paisaje-Duración (DurationLandscape), Montaña en Sombra (Mountain in Shadow), La Imagen Arde, PaisajeCarretera, Na vibración da auga and Rocas.
