Event
Alki Point for All
Alki Point is an area of West Seattle that features a public shoreline and city park with spectacular views of Puget Sound, adjacent to a marine reserve. People come from all over the world to visit the Lighthouse; to storm-watch, bird-watch, whale-watch, and go tide-pooling; to walk, bike, skate, run or simply enjoy the view. Alki Point has provided respite and recreation for generations.
For nonprofit organizations and schools, Alki Point offers a unique opportunity to educate and inspire. From octopus to orcas, the site offers direct and easy access to a marine ecosystem a front door to the Salish Sea.
A series of changes by Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will radically change public access to this well-used place. In 2020, SDOT designated the area a "Keep Moving Street" and closed the area to all but local traffic. Street Closed signs have cut people off from the Point, and kept most of the public away, ever since.
In late 2023, SDOT announced its plans to remove most of the parking from the west side of the street to create a 10-ft-wide "walking, rolling" lane. That decision was announced only when the design was final, and too late for public comment or review. Construction is scheduled to begin as soon as this week.
In early 2024, The Alki Point for All Coalition launched a petition asking the Mayor to halt this project until its impacts have been fully considered. More than 1300 people have signed the petition so far. https://www.change.org/AlkiPointforAll
At this event, members of the coalition will present updates about their efforts, including a recent meeting with SDOT. The group will share their ideas for how street art could be used to calm traffic and create a more inclusive Healthy Street that serves the wider community.
There is no charge for this event. Pre-registration is recommended but not required, so we can estimate how many people to expect.
The Alki Point for All coalition consists of organizations (The Whale Trail and Seal Sitters) and individuals (Vlad Oustavomich, Leo Shaw, Bill Rogers.) Hope to see you there! .
